Goodbye 2022, hello 2023 – The New Year’s Concert 2023
Happy New Year, we hope you were able to celebrate the end of 2022 with your loved ones.
It’s time for Austria’s most famous concert, will you watch it? Today we want to introduce you to the history of the concert. Here are some facts about the New Year’s Concert 2023:
This year Franz Welser-Möst is conducting the concert in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna. It’s the third time Welser-Möst is conducting the New Year’s concert. The first time he conducted it was in 2011 and the second in 2013. People from over 90 countries will watch the concert.
The first New Year’s Concert took place on December 31st 1939. Clemens Krauss kept conducting the concerts until the end of the war. From 1939 on it had been held in the Musikverein. From 1941 on it had been held on the morning of the 1st of January.
To this day, the waltz An der schönen blauen Donau, op. 314, and the Radetzky March, op. 228, are a fixed part of the program. This year you can hear 14 of the 15 works for the first time in this setting at the beginning of the new year. For the first time in history, the Vienna Choral Girls are joining the Vienna Boys’ Choir – the female faction of the traditional choir founded in 2004. The Vienna City Gardens are producing the arrangements that decorate the Musikverein.
