When in Wien…nein nein nein nicht??
It’s a new year, and a new opportunity to learn some Wienerisch! An expression you have almost certainly heard at some point, but likely ignored if you didn’t understand it is: na no na ned! Only the Viennese could make German look so …un-German. This phrase is often shortened to ‘no na ned’, or just simply ‘no na’, and despite the fact that it is formed from what is essentially a string of mispronounced no’s (nein nein nein nicht), it confusingly means: of course /obviously/ you’d have to be an idiot to not understand! “Na no na ned” is not to be confused with “na, no ned”, also commonly heard on the mean streets of Wien, meaning “nein, noch nicht” (no, not yet). A comma and some context can make all the difference around here, so be careful out there…!
