About Vienna’s English Theatre

Vienna’s English Theatre began in 1963 with an idea that proved far more popular than its founders anticipated. Austrian director Franz Schafranek and American actress Ruth Brinkmann established a summer theatre for tourists, but Viennese audiences quickly embraced it too. What started as a seasonal venture grew into a year-round cultural institution and the oldest English-language theatre in continental Europe.

The theatre found its permanent home on Josefsgasse in 1974. Over the following decades, its reputation attracted internationally recognised performers and playwrights, including Tennessee Williams and Edward Albee. Albee’s Three Tall Women, which later won the Pulitzer Prize, received its world premiere here in 1991.

Today, a visit connects you with that history while offering something immediate: the pleasure of watching a story unfold on stage, in English, in a city with a deep love of theatre.

Sherlock Holmes: The Valley of Fear | Vienna's English Theatre
Sherlock Holmes: The Valley of Fear | 3.11.26–22.12.26

A mysterious murder, a locked mansion and an enemy who is always one step ahead. Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson return to Vienna’s English Theatre in Philip Dart’s adaptation of The Valley of Fear. Five performers bring a whole world of suspects and secrets to life in an adventure stretching from rural England to the American West.

When a wealthy American is found dead inside a securely locked mansion in the village of Birlstone, Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are called upon to investigate. The clues are puzzling, the circumstances seem impossible, and the victim’s past holds more questions than answers.

Their search takes the story beyond the English countryside to the American West, revealing a dangerous history that refuses to stay buried. Meanwhile, the shadow of Professor Moriarty looms over the investigation, turning the search for a murderer into a race against time.

Following the theatre’s productions of Baskerville and The Sign of the Four, this new adventure brings Holmes and Watson back to the stage with a cast of five switching between characters, costumes and settings. Prima Facie | 26.1.27–27.2.27

What happens when a lawyer’s faith in justice is tested by her own experience? Suzie Miller’s Prima Facie follows a successful barrister whose life forces her to confront the system she has always defended. Winner of the 2023 Olivier Award for Best New Play, this powerful one-woman drama explores the uneasy relationship between truth, power and the law.

Tessa has earned her place in the courtroom. Coming from a working-class background, she has built a successful career as a barrister, specialising in defending men accused of sexual assault. She knows how to question a witness, challenge an account and use the rules of evidence to make her case.

She also believes in those rules. For Tessa, the presumption of innocence and the discipline of the courtroom are essential foundations of justice. But when a personal experience changes her life, the system she understands so well begins to look very different.

Through one woman’s story, Prima Facie examines what happens when lived experience meets the demands of legal proof. It is an intense evening of theatre that asks audiences to consider who the law serves, whose testimony is believed and what justice means beyond a verdict.

Glitterball | 16.3.27–30.4.27

Family secrets, unexpected reunions and the songs of Shirley Bassey come together in Yasmin Wilde’s Glitterball. Catch its Continental European Premiere at Vienna’s English Theatre for an evening of humour, music and new beginnings.

Sonia grew up as one half of a Shirley Bassey tribute act. Half English and half Pakistani, she has spent much of her life balancing different parts of her identity while living in the shadow of her formidable mother.

With live music, Shirley Bassey songs and Bhangra rhythms, Glitterball follows the surprises and complications that come with discovering where you belong. Taking Steps | 19.5.27–3.7.27

A supposedly haunted house, a nervous solicitor and a marriage on the brink turn a property deal into comic chaos. Alan Ayckbourn’s Taking Steps brings mistaken identities, tangled relationships and inventive physical comedy to Vienna’s English Theatre. With three floors represented on a single stage level, even getting up the stairs becomes part of the fun.

Tristram, a painfully tongue-tied solicitor, has been sent to oversee the sale of a crumbling Victorian house. The prospective buyer is Roland, a hard-drinking businessman who is renting the property from a less-than-reassuring builder. The house also comes with a questionable past and rumours of a ghost.

Meanwhile, Roland’s wife Elizabeth, a frustrated former dancer, is preparing to leave him. Her brother Mark and his fiancée Kitty add further complications as the characters cross paths, misunderstand each other and find themselves in increasingly awkward situations.

The play’s staging makes the confusion even more entertaining. All three storeys of the house occupy the same stage level, with actors miming their journeys up and down the stairs. Across one turbulent night and the following morning, Ayckbourn turns this unusual arrangement into a farce full of mistaken identities, apparent hauntings and precisely timed physical comedy.
