Maschi brings Viennese coffeehouse culture into her home:
Few institutions are as closely woven into Vienna’s identity as its coffeehouses. They have helped shape the city’s literary, artistic and intellectual life, becoming places where writers worked, ideas found an audience and conversations became part of cultural history. Their distinctive rituals, atmosphere and sweet specialities remain an essential part of how Vienna understands itself. In this Viennese Coffeehouse Experience, Maschi brings that culture into her beautiful private home, inviting you to explore its history through preparation, tasting and conversation.
In her spacious apartment on the border of Vienna’s first and second districts, the focus is on two much-loved specialities: Punschkrapfen, the little cakes with their distinctive pink icing, and Kaiserschmarrn, the fluffy pancake torn into golden pieces. With Maschi’s guidance, you take part in selected stages of their preparation, learning about the food you might otherwise encounter only behind a pastry counter or on a menu.
An experienced cook and baker, Maschi puts considerable preparation into your visit, both in the kitchen and in researching the stories she tells. Some components are ready before you arrive, allowing the three hours to unfold at a relaxed pace, with time to prepare, taste, ask questions and explore the traditions behind the food.
