A historical culinary tour in Vienna:
On this tour, we embark on a culinary journey through time. You’ll learn about historical markets, such as the Viennese Crab Market, since when we eat Kipferl in Vienna and how ingredients and spices we take for granted today found their way to us. You will learn how Lent influenced our menu, how coffee changed breakfast habits, and how sausage stands are historically connected to Napoleon. We will look at three levels:
- The ingredients: During the tour, you will learn where our most used ingredients come from, since when they have been in use and on which route they came to us.
- Viennese dishes, from whom we learned them and where they have been further exported to.
- How groceries and the method of preparation changed throughout history.
The tour includes various small tastings throughout the tour. Do not expect a full lunch on this tour but small samples that will complement the stories you will hear. The tastings are included in the tour’s price.

Why book our culinary history tour?
This tour is perfect for both culinary lovers and history lovers. Vienna’s culinary past is much richer than what many think and while it’s known today for its Schnitzel and Strudel, it has and had a lot more to offer. On this tour our guide Max will tell you some fascinating stories that will awaken your curiosity and appetite.

Upon request we can publish a public tour to reduce the tour’s price per person. A public tour costs 40 euros per participant (including 2 small tastings) and requires a minimum of 6 participants.
Tour conditions:
Minimum number of participants: The tour takes place as a private tour but can also be opened as a public tour upon request. It will take place as a public tour if at least 6 people are registered. In case there aren’t enough participants, we will unfortunately cancel the tour and issue you a full refund.
Cancellation policy: You can cancel your booking up to 48 hours in advance. If you cancel your booking less than 48 hours before the tour we won’t be able to issue a refund. Certain exceptions apply such as emergency situations. Please note, we reserve the right to cancel the tour up to 48 hours in advance too. We will do so if our guide is unavailable due to a sudden change or if we do not have the minimum number of participants required for the tour.
Pictures and videos: Please be aware that we might take photos and videos during the tour. If you don’t want to appear in any Secret Vienna promotional pictures, please let us know by sending us a message.
