Discover Jewish Vienna at Maschi’s table:
Jewish writers, journalists and merchants helped shape Vienna’s coffeehouse culture, while generations of Jewish families brought recipes and baking traditions into the city’s kitchens. In this Jewish Viennese Baking Experience, Maschi welcomes you into her beautiful private home to explore that heritage through two specialities: Mohnstrudel, filled with poppy seeds, and Nussbeugel, crescent-shaped pastries with a walnut filling.
In her spacious apartment on the border of Vienna’s first and second districts, you take part in selected preparations with the guidance of an experienced cook and baker. Maschi prepares some components before your arrival, leaving time to enjoy the baking and discover the history behind it. While the pastries bake, she tells stories about Jewish immigration, distinctive baking traditions and the people who contributed to Vienna’s cultural life.
Then gather around her large dining table to enjoy the pastries, alongside a small piece of Apfelstrudel served for tasting. The conversation continues with Jewish coffeehouse traditions, the history of challah and, depending on your interests, Jewish life in Vienna past and present. With Maschi’s personal perspective and carefully researched stories, these three hours offer an opportunity to explore a part of Vienna’s history through food and conversation with a local Jewish host.
