Our Top Christkindlmärkte in Vienna
Soon Vienna’s Christkindlmärkte open their gates and it can be tricky to figure out which ones are worth the visit. Over the upcoming weeks we’ll introduce you to our favorite Christkindlmärkte in Vienna, starting today.
1.Altwiener Markt | 18th of November – 25th of December
Located at the Freyung, this market is very traditional. In the 1980s the first ‘Altwiener Markt’ (old Viennese Market) took place at the Michaelerplatz and then they soon moved to the Freyung. Their vision was to bring the historic, traditional Christmas markets back to Vienna, to work against the commercialization of Christmas. Here you will come across handicrafts, traditional Austrian works and all kinds of food and drinks. Make sure to study their website for more information about the stalls.
2. Wiener Christkindlmarkt | 19th of November – 26th of December
This is Vienna’s most famous Christkindlmarkt, located in front of the Rathaus. The Christmas tree, which was first erected here in 1959, has been the focal point of the Christkindlmarkt ever since; every year, the tree is given to Vienna as a gift by a different Austrian province. The market is quite big, the stalls offer all kinds of handicrafts, food and drinks, trying to focus on Austrian traditions. The Krippenpfad (crib path) you can walk along shows a special type of crib scene each year, for example oriental or Italian.
3. Weihnachtsdorf Maria-Theresien-Platz | 16th of November – 23rd of December
Located between the KHM and the NHM, this Christmas market has 72 stalls with rustic handicrafts, handmade Christmas decorations and small souvenirs. From 2005 on Maria-Theresien-Platz was used as the base for the Christmas village. The idea was to use the famous buildings and to relieve the Christkindlmarkt at the Rathausplatz. The location definitely adds to the imperial Christmas feeling.
