Have you ever heard of Vienna’s Museum of Art Fakes? the Fälschermuseum Wien is located in the 3rd district (vis-a-vis the Hundertwasserhaus) and is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm and on Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm.
This museum is the only real counterfeiting museum in the world. Here you can learn more about criminal stories about the forged works of notorious art forgers. Names such as Han van Meegeren, Konrad Kujau, Edgar Mrugalla,Tom Keating, Elmyr de Hory, John Myatt and many others. You will also be informed about the differences between original, copy and forgery.
You will get to see identity forgeries (identical copies of existing works), style fakes (painting in the style of a famous artist), copies (of existing works) and oddities (existing works that have been altered or edited, false fakes, false claims, and more).
