Vienna’s Stadtwanderweg 1

Explore Vienna’s natural beauty in Stadtwanderweg 1

Warmer weather and hopefully some rainless days will allow us to go on adventures outside of the inner city. This month we want to introduce you to some hiking trails that will take you through the outer parts of our city. Today I want to tell you a bit about the Stadtwanderweg 1

This trail is 11 km long, but don’t worry, you can easily access the trail from different points. The official route starts in Nussdorf (part of the 19th district; you can reach Nussdorf with the Straßenbahn D, get off at the final stop), sends you onto the Zahnradbahnstraße, followed by the Beethovengang and the Wildgrube, along the Höhenstraße, where you will eventually reach the Kahlenberg (don’t forget to enjoy the viewing platform there; you can also take the bus 38A back down to Heiligenstadt from the Kahlenberg) and back down you will walk past the Josefinenhütte (a nice restaurant where you can take a break), down the Eisernenhandgasse and the Kahlenbergstraße and you will end the trail back at the final stop in Nussdorf. Visit the official website of the hiking trails for further information about the stops.

This may sound a bit confusing, but the hiking trail can be followed with the mobile city map or via signposts that lead you into the right direction. If you want to, you could get your hands on the Wanderpass (download it here), fill the pass with stamps (you can get the stamp at the Josefinenhütte for this trail) and you will get a small present if you fill the whole pass.

Those of you that want to enjoy parts of this route but don’t want to walk the trail, you can take the bus 38A to the Kahlenberg (starts in Heiligenstadt).
