Rumzentrum Vienna: A Specialist Rum Shop with Tastings and a Blending Workshop

What would you choose from more than 800 rums? A familiar bottle, something from a country you have never associated with rum, or a blend you have put together yourself?

At Rumzentrum on Lerchenfelder Straße, that choice is part of the attraction. The specialist shop brings together an extensive spirits collection, guided tastings and a workshop where visitors can experiment with their own blend. Located on the border between Josefstadt and Neubau, it offers several ways to explore a drink that has been at the heart of the business since its beginnings in Baden.

From Three Friends in Baden to a Shop in Vienna

Rumzentrum’s story began in 2013, when Nicolas Hold, Dominik Gschiegl and Christian Seidl took over a small rum shop in Baden, south of Vienna. Its selection then numbered around 200 varieties.

The business gradually grew beyond those beginnings. A larger Baden shop with two tasting rooms followed in 2018. Gin joined the range in 2020, with whisky and tequila added in 2023. The move to Vienna brought that expanding collection to Lerchenfelder Straße, along with a dedicated tasting area.

The founders’ different interests help explain the breadth of the selection. Nicolas seeks out unusual bottlings, Christian brings a background in cocktail culture, and Dominik favours aromatic, often sweeter styles. Together, those preferences make room for different approaches to rum, whether you are choosing a bottle for cocktails or exploring something less familiar.

A Rum Specialist with a Broader Spirits Collection

According to Rumzentrum, its range includes more than 800 rums from over 50 countries, within a wider selection of more than 1,300 spirits. Rum remains the main focus, alongside whisky, gin, tequila and liqueurs.

The online catalogue offers a useful starting point for anyone unsure where to begin. You can browse rum by origin, style or flavour, from fruity and spicy profiles to wood and vanilla notes. Familiar brands sit alongside limited editions and single-cask bottlings. It is a selection that invites a more specific question than simply “Which rum is best?” What do you enjoy, and what would you like to try next?

Rumzentrum also has its own products, including Hummingbird, Don Coconut and Tiki Gold. Among the Hummingbird editions are bottlings finished in barrels from the Austrian winery Leo Aumann, adding a local connection to the internationally sourced collection.

Rum Tastings in Vienna

Tastings are an established part of Rumzentrum’s business, with formats aimed at both beginners and more experienced enthusiasts. The Vienna shop has a dedicated area for them, giving visitors a way to explore the selection beyond reading labels or choosing a bottle online.

For someone new to rum, a tasting offers a starting point. For someone who already has a favourite style, it provides a reason to branch out. The programme and individual event descriptions are worth checking before booking, so you can choose a session that matches your interests.

Create Your Own Blend at the Rumwerkstatt

For a more hands-on experience, the Rumwerkstatt, or rum workshop, lets participants develop their own blend.

The process begins with choosing from existing rums, then combining them and experimenting with flavourings such as vanilla, cinnamon, fruit or spices. A member of the team provides guidance as participants adjust their creation. The workshop also includes choosing a bottle and personalising its label.

This is a blending experience rather than a distilling course: you work with spirits that have already been produced. The format gives you a practical way to explore how different choices affect the finished drink—and to create something based on your own preferences. Reservations and the current workshop details are available on Rumzentrum’s website.
