Christmas markets, sparkling streets and a warming cup of punch are all part of visiting Vienna in November and December. But when the cold starts getting through your coat, having something wonderful planned indoors makes the evening even better. This season, our recommendation comes with a locked mansion, a mysterious death and a detective who rarely overlooks a clue.
From 3 November to 22 December 2026, Vienna’s English Theatre presents Sherlock Holmes: The Valley of Fear, adapted and directed by Philip Dart. Performed in English, it offers international visitors and Vienna residents an evening of mystery in a theatre we have returned to again and again.
At Secret Vienna, we have attended nearly every production here over the last several years, and each visit has been a success. That experience is the reason we recommend the theatre—and why we have partnered with its team to make tickets available directly through our website.

A locked mansion, a dead man and a dangerous past
The story begins in Birlstone, an English village where a wealthy American has been found dead inside an isolated mansion. The building was locked from within. Someone knows what happened, but the clues offer no easy explanation.
Enter Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson.
Their investigation leads them through puzzling evidence and encounters with an assortment of suspicious characters. Gradually, the case begins to reach far beyond the English countryside. The victim’s past points towards the American West, and a history that seemed safely buried starts to emerge.
Then there is Professor Moriarty. With Holmes’s greatest enemy involved, identifying a murderer becomes only part of the challenge. Holmes and Watson must work quickly before Moriarty’s plans reach their conclusion.
We will leave the discoveries to you. Part of the pleasure of a detective story is deciding which details matter—and wondering whether you have spotted something before Holmes explains it.
Five actors bring a whole adventure to the stage
How do you move from an English country house to Colorado without leaving a theatre? In this production, much of the answer lies in the performers.
A cast of five brings the story to life through rapid changes of character, costume and setting. Alex Boorman, Emily Ash, Thomas Wingfield, Michael Stafford Wells and Robert Rickman make up the ensemble, with set and costume design by Ken Harrison and lighting by Nick Richings.
This is one of the reasons we enjoy live theatre so much: the transformation happens in front of you. A change of costume, movement or voice can introduce another character and take the story somewhere entirely new.
The production follows the theatre’s sold-out Sherlock Holmes adventures, Baskerville and The Sign of the Four. Readers who know Secret Vienna will understand why these stories appeal to us. Mysteries, hidden motives and the secrets behind an apparently ordinary place are subjects we rarely tire of exploring.
Why we keep recommending Vienna’s English Theatre
Our recommendation comes from years of sitting in the audience. We have seen the theatre tackle different stories, genres and moods, and have consistently been impressed by the quality of the experience.
The actors are a major part of that. So are the staging, costumes and the care that goes into the productions. The intimate venue brings you close to the performance, making it easy to become absorbed in the story rather than feel like a distant spectator.
For international visitors, there is another straightforward advantage: the performance is entirely in English. You can make theatre part of your Vienna trip without needing to follow a play in German. It is equally appealing for English-speaking residents looking for an evening out or somewhere to take visiting friends.
We are recommending this new production on the strength of that long relationship and the theatre’s previous work. The Valley of Fear opens in November, and we are looking forward to discovering this adventure ourselves.
Make it part of your Christmas-season plans
November and December are wonderful months to explore Vienna, but they are also cold months to spend an entire evening outdoors. A theatre booking gives your day a comfortable rhythm: explore the city, enjoy the seasonal atmosphere, then settle into your seat for a story that takes you somewhere else.
With performances beginning at 19:30, you can plan an early dinner before the show. Once the Christmas markets are open, a market visit earlier in the day also fits naturally into the itinerary. Leave enough time to reach the theatre and collect your tickets without rushing.
This is a particularly good option for couples, friends and visitors travelling with relatives who enjoy a shared evening out. There are clues to debate, characters to suspect and, afterwards, the inevitable question: did anyone actually work it out?
The production runs until 22 December, making it an option for a visit in the weeks leading up to Christmas. It does not run over Christmas itself.
Our partnership with the theatre
We work with Vienna’s English Theatre because we want more of our guests to discover a place we value personally. Many visitors arrive in Vienna with concerts, museums and palaces already on their list. English-language theatre deserves a place there too.
Through our partnership, you can book tickets to the theatre’s main productions directly with Secret Vienna. Our ticket includes a Category 2 seat and a complimentary programme, giving you an introduction to the production and the people behind it.
Choose your performance date on our tickets page and pay online. After receiving your booking confirmation, collect your tickets at the theatre’s box office on the evening of the performance, under the name used for your booking. Seats are allocated by the theatre; specific rows and seat numbers cannot be selected through our booking.
