Today I want to share an old Viennese Christmas cookie recipe with you. Christmas baked goods were once reserved for aristocrats, formed by hand, and made into small shapes. Dried pieces were also used as decorations for the Christmas tree.
Easy nut-based cookies:
You’ll need 160g butter, 60g powdered sugar, 1 egg, 1 pack of vanilla sugar, some lemon peel, 160g of cake flour, 120g of grounded nuts and some strawberry jam (if you want to add a sweeter note). Preheat the oven to 180°C top and bottom heat.
Beat butter and sugar until foamy, add the egg and all other ingredients (besides the jam). Pour the batter into shapes on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake till they get a light brown color. Decorate to your liking.
The taste may remind you of our traditional Vanillekipferl, both came up around similar times and were used as “Teegebäck” – shared while drinking afternoon tea.
